Lapland with kids — the family guide

Lapland is genuinely magical for children, but it's also cold, dark and tiring. Here's how to plan a trip your kids will actually enjoy.

Few destinations live up to a child's expectations the way Lapland does. Reindeer are real, huskies are loud and friendly, snow is everywhere, and Santa really does live in Rovaniemi — there is a permanent post office that answers every letter. But it's also dark by 3pm in midwinter, often well below −15 °C, and a packed itinerary will exhaust a small child faster than parents expect. This guide is the trip we'd plan for our own families.

Best ages

From around age 3 children old enough to understand the magic of Santa and reindeer get the most out of the trip. Ages 4–9 is the sweet spot. Toddlers under 3 cope fine but won't remember most of it, and the cold is harder on them. Teenagers tend to engage best with husky sledding, snowmobiling (16+ to drive) and the aurora.

How long to stay

Four full days is the minimum we recommend with kids — three feels rushed and a single day in Rovaniemi from a cruise is not enough to do the place justice. Five to six days lets you split between Santa-focused experiences and one or two slower day trips. See how many days do you need in Lapland for a fuller breakdown.

A sample 5-day plan

  • Day 1: Arrive, settle in, short walk in town. Don't book anything for the evening — flights and the cold are tiring.
  • Day 2: Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi. Meet Santa, cross the Arctic Circle, post a letter home, ride a reindeer sleigh on site. Half a day is plenty.
  • Day 3: Husky farm visit with a short sledge ride. Most operators offer 5–10 km rides that are perfect for families.
  • Day 4: A slower nature day — snowshoeing, an ice-fishing trip, or a long lazy lunch at a forest restaurant. Aurora tour in the evening if forecasts look good.
  • Day 5: Reindeer farm visit (different operator from the husky day), souvenir shopping, fly home.

Husky and reindeer safety

Working sled dogs are friendly but excitable, especially before a run. Kids should approach calmly, ask the musher before petting, and never put fingers near a dog's face. Reindeer are gentler but bigger than they look — most farms ask children to stay outside the pen and offer hand-feeding through the fence. Operators we work with brief families thoroughly before any contact.

Aurora hunting with children

Be realistic: many aurora tours run from 8pm to midnight, which is brutal for a 5-year-old. Better options for families:

  • Stay somewhere with aurora-alert wake-up service — many cabins and glass igloos offer this.
  • Book a glass-roofed cabin or aurora bus that includes a warm waiting area; kids can nap until the lights appear.
  • Choose an early-evening tour (often labelled 'family aurora') that returns by 10pm.

What to pack for kids

Operators provide thermal overalls and boots in children's sizes (confirm in advance — call ahead for sizes under EU 28). Bring extras of what gets wet or lost: gloves, socks, hats. A small thermos for warm drinks is gold. Snacks always — Arctic activities burn calories. See our winter packing guide for the full list.

Where to base

Rovaniemi is the easier choice with kids: Santa Claus Village is right there, daily direct flights from London, Frankfurt and several other European cities, and the widest range of family-friendly accommodation. Levi is a ski resort first — better if you want to combine the trip with downhill skiing, less convenient for a pure 'Santa and reindeer' family trip. Our Rovaniemi vs Levi guide compares them properly.

Special considerations

  • Pushchairs don't work in deep snow — bring a sledge or hire one locally.
  • Most hotels in Rovaniemi and Levi have family rooms; book early for school holidays.
  • Christmas week is the busiest and most expensive — early December or January often gives the same magic at half the price.
  • If anyone has reduced mobility, accessible huskies, reindeer and aurora experiences exist — ask us.
